New Deal is a small farming town straight north of Lubbock on I-27, and it carries its name honestly — the school district took it in the 1930s from the New Deal programs that were keeping this part of the country going at the time, and the town took it from the school. From our yard it is a thirty-five minute run up through Lubbock to I-27 and off at the New Deal exit. There is not much town: a school that people are genuinely proud of, a handful of streets of mid-century brick and frame houses, the elevators, and then farm ground in every direction. Most of our work here is outside the town limits rather than in it — shop buildings, machine sheds, an old barn coming down, a farmstead being cleared after a place sells. In town it is roofs after a hail run and the occasional full house cleanout, and both come with the same conversation about size and weight.

The wind out here is not a nuisance, it is a design constraint. There is no shelter on this ground at all, and a container loaded high with light material on an open farmstead will scatter across a section before anybody notices. Heavy on top of light, nothing above the rails, and we would rather set the box in the lee of a building than out in the open where we have a choice. The other constant is weight: farm cleanouts are steel, timber, old fencing, concrete and dirt, all dense, so we size down and swap more often instead of sending a 40 that cannot legally leave. The interstate makes the approach easy and the last mile is the part we ask about — section roads out here are caliche or dirt, cattle guards can be narrower than they look, and a turnaround that works for a pickup does not always work for a loaded roll-off. Permits, streets and placement in New Deal
