Ransom Canyon is the one place on our whole map that does not look like the South Plains. The town is built down into the Yellow House Canyon below the Caprock, around a small lake, and it is the only genuine topography within an hour of Lubbock — steep lots, houses stepped down the slope, cantilevered decks, retaining walls, switchback streets and a good number of one-off custom homes rather than tract housing. Robert Bruno’s Steel House sits on the rim and everybody who has driven out here knows it. From our yard it is about half an hour: east on US-84 and then north on FM 835 down into the canyon. The work here is remodels, deck and dock replacement, roofs after hail, and the periodic clear-out of a house that has been in one family since the lake community was young. It is also the delivery that takes the most planning of anywhere we serve.

What we know about working in Ransom Canyon

Grade is the whole job here. A loaded roll-off is heavy and a truck backing down a steep, curving canyon drive is a decision we make on site, not over the phone. Plenty of Ransom Canyon houses have drives that fall away hard from the street, tight turns between rock walls, and no flat spot at the bottom — in those cases we set at the top on the street side or on the flattest apron available and you carry down, which nobody loves but which beats a truck on its belly. We put boards down as standard because so many drives here are decorative concrete or pavers. Wind funnels through the canyon differently than it does on the flat, so caps and tarps still matter. Hail hits this canyon as hard as anywhere in the county from March through June.

Getting a truck to you

East on US-84 out of the yard, then north on FM 835 and down into the canyon — about half an hour. The last quarter mile is the part that matters. We want to know the drive grade, whether there is a flat place to set, how tight the turn off the street is, and whether there are walls, gate posts or overhead lines in the swing. A photograph of the drive taken from the street tells us more than any description and saves a wasted trip.

Permits, streets and placement in Ransom Canyon

On a private driveway in Ransom Canyon you generally do not need a municipal permit. Placement in the public street or right-of-way is a different matter and normally requires approval — from the borough or township where the road is locally maintained, or from TxDOT where it is a state route. Every municipality in Lubbock County runs its own form and its own lead time, and older streets here often have no off-street parking at all, so plan the permit before you plan the delivery.
