Hail is the market here. Lubbock sits in a serious hail corridor and the season runs roughly March through June, and when a cell tracks across the city the entire roofing trade books out within days. Adjusters stack up, supplier lead times stretch, and the crews that already have containers on the ground are the ones still working at the end of the week. That is why our roofing customers call us before the storm rather than after it, and why we hold capacity through the spring.

Sizing a tear-off is arithmetic, not guesswork. It goes on squares and layers, never on how big the roof looks from the street. A square of asphalt shingle weighs a couple of hundred pounds and dimensional laminate weighs more, so a two-layer tear-off is not the same job with a bigger box, it is double the tonnage in the same footprint. Our tear-off size guide runs the numbers through by squares so nobody guesses on the morning of a start.

Older Lubbock houses complicate it further. Central Lubbock and Tech Terrace carry two- and three-layer roofs where somebody laid over instead of tearing off, and out in the county metal roofing on ag buildings and equipment sheds is worth pulling as scrap before the remainder goes in a container. Whatever the roof, wrappers and felt are the first things to leave a box in the wind. See hail damage cleanup for the full sequence.

Roofing Jobs We Set Containers For

Hail Damage Tear-Off

The bread and butter from March through June. Bruised and fractured shingle comes off whole slopes at once, and the container has to be on site the morning the crew starts, not that afternoon.

Two And Three Layer Tear-Offs

Older central Lubbock stock where previous roofs were laid over rather than removed. Weight doubles or triples for the same roof area, so the box gets sized on tonnage instead of footprint.

Dimensional And Architectural Shingle

Laminate shingle is noticeably heavier per square than three-tab. A roof that would have taken one container in three-tab may well need a swap when it is architectural.

Metal Roof Removal

Common on rural and agricultural buildings around Lubbock County. Panel and trim are usually worth pulling for scrap value first, with fasteners, closures and underlayment going in the container.

Wood Shake And Tile Removal

Less common here but it turns up. Tile is dense and shake is bulky, and the two size very differently, so describe what is actually up there before we send a container.

Decking And Structural Repair

Hail and wind events expose rotten or delaminated decking. Sheathing, fascia, soffit and damaged rafters add bulk on top of the shingle tonnage you already planned around.

Flat And Low-Slope Commercial Roofs

Built-up roofing, modified bitumen and ballast off retail and office buildings. Heavy, often wet after a storm, and best loaded into a small box that will not go overweight.

Storm Debris And Related Repair

Fence panels, gutters, shredded awnings, downed limbs and outbuilding damage from the same cell. Often the same crew in the same week, and it loads into the same container.

Sizing A Tear-Off By Squares And Layers

Work in squares. A 10 yard suits a small single-layer asphalt roof, a garage or a shed, and it is the safe choice on a tight drive. Most single-family single-layer tear-offs land on a 15 yard, which is our most common roofing set by a wide margin. A 20 yard covers a larger roof, a two-layer job, or a tear-off with decking replacement folded into the same load. Beyond that we would rather run two smaller boxes with a swap than one that cannot legally be tipped, because shingle is dense enough to hit weight while the walls still look half empty. Tell us squares, layers and shingle type on the phone and we will size it properly the first time.

Wind, Nails And What Comes Off The Roof

Tear-off day in Lubbock has two enemies: gravity and wind. Wrappers, felt, underlayment and ridge cap packaging are light and flat, which is precisely what a forty mile an hour afternoon wants. Bag the light material as it comes off, bury it under the shingle weight in the box, stay below the top rail and tarp before the crew leaves. Set the container tight to the slope so the shovels have a short throw, with protection boards under the rails on concrete and on a caliche drive alike. Then sweep. A rolling magnet across the drive, the lawn and the street is not optional, because a nail in a tire a week later is the complaint that costs a roofer a referral. Our wind and load guide has the routine.

Roofing Dumpster Rental FAQs

What size dumpster do I need for a roof tear-off?

Size it on squares and layers rather than roof area. As a working rule, a small single-layer asphalt roof fits a 10 yard, most single-family single-layer jobs fit a 15 yard, and a larger or two-layer roof needs a 20 yard. Architectural laminate is heavier per square than three-tab, and decking replacement adds bulk on top. Our tear-off size guide works through real examples. Tell us squares, layers and shingle type.

How quickly can you deliver after a hail storm?

Honestly, it depends on how big the cell was. In a normal week same-day or next-day is routine. In the days after a serious hail event across Lubbock, every roofer in the region is booking at once and we run flat out, so lead times stretch for everybody. The crews that get containers are the ones who called early and gave us a schedule. Read how same-day actually works before promising a homeowner a start date.

Does insurance cover the dumpster on a hail claim?

Debris removal is usually built into the roofing scope on a claim rather than billed separately by the homeowner, but that depends on the policy and the adjuster. Ask your roofer how their estimate handles it before you order anything yourself. The Texas Department of Insurance publishes plain-language guidance on the claims process. Policy terms and consumer rules change, so confirm the details with your own insurer.

The house is from the 1950s. Can old roofing felt contain asbestos?

It can. Pre-1980 roofing felt, mastic and some built-up assemblies were made with asbestos, and central Lubbock and Tech Terrace have plenty of houses old enough to matter. That is a stop-and-test moment rather than a gamble, and the same caution applies to floor tile and pipe wrap inside. We cannot take asbestos-containing material in any container. Texas DSHS regulates it here and the requirements are revised periodically.

What happens to the nails in the driveway and lawn?

A good crew sweeps with a rolling magnet before it leaves — the drive, the walkway, the lawn edge and the street where the container sat. Ask whether that is included before you hire anybody. Nails work into a tire or a bare foot days later, and it is the one thing homeowners remember about a roof job. We set the box tight to the work so there is less throw and less spill, and we sweep our own footprint when we pull it.
